Who is required to get GST registration?

GST registration is mandatory for some businesses and people to remain law abiding. Here’s who should apply:

  1. Service Providers: It is mandatory to register for GST by service providers providing services over 20 lakhs (10 lakhs if the business is in a special category state). That is for freelancers, consultants and agencies.
  2. Existing Taxpayer: Any business which was registered under VAT, Service Tax etc prior to GST and is migrating to the new regime.
  3. Aggregators: E-commerce companies connecting consumers to sellers like Amazon or Flipkart who do not actually own the sold goods should be registered irrespective of their turnover.
  4. Inter-State Sellers: Those who supply goods and services to other states have to register with GST compulsorily even if turnover is below limit.
  5. Casual Taxable Persons: Suppliers occasionally dealing with taxable supplies in a State or UT in which they have no fixed place of business need to get registered under GST.
  6. Agents of Suppliers: If you are an agent who acts on behalf of or supplies goods and services for other people, you will have to register.
  7. Input Service Distributor (ISD): A person who distributes the Input Tax Credits to other branches.
  8. Non-resident Taxable Persons: If a person is supplying goods or service in India but does not have a fixed place of business or residence here, they are liable to get themselves registered as non-residents taxable persons.
  9. RCM Entities: All those who are responsible to pay tax under reverse charge mechanism (RCM), i.e, where the receiver pays tax instead of supplier must be registered.
